How to budget for GSRs

Many ARI applications include Graduate Student Researchers (GSRs). The various scenarios and costs for hiring GSRs are complex, and while ARI is not responsible for interpreting HR and financial policy, we have created the following steps below to help you budget GSR costs to serve as a guide for your application. Ultimately your budget will have to be approved by the Arts Business Office.

Please contact Hannah Lyde-Epperson (hlydeepp@ucsc.edu), Divisional HR, to confirm that your GSR calculations are accurate and match current hiring rates and fees before you submit your ARI application.

How to calculate GSR costs:

  1.  Find the step of your GSR:
    Step 4 (Incoming Arts Grads) - $22.56/hr
    Step 5 (With Masters) -  $24.06/hr
    Step 6 (Adv to Candidacy) -  $25.18/hr
  2. Multiply the number of hours you plan to have them work by their hourly rate.
  3. If your GSR is working during the summer or during a break, do not add Gship fees.
  4. If your GSR will be working 10 or more hours per week during the school year, add $5,749.86 for Gship fees. (10 hrs/week = 25% appointment)
  5. Add $20 for a small benefit fee
